Honorable Mention
To Jerusalem, Three Font Holy”
Gary Blankenship

Holy, who first set down your sacred stones?
Did fresh blood freely flow from new altars
until the rancid flood tarnished God’s throne?

Did you ignore His pain? Did you not hear
Him cry as another innocent died?
I wish not, but your face has Herod’s sneer

and your lanes run copper with human pride.
Jerusalem, if I could cry for you,
my tears would not turn the quick-flowing tide.

Al-Quds, if I had Allah’s ear, the few
pale words in me would be too late and weak
to cease the carnage. It will continue

until after the Earth’s valleys fill, peaks
tumble and seas boil. Man will never
learn how to soften his bellicose speech.

And your streets will be stained red forever.
